The final handle foundation. After grinding the point, a long strip of lead is cut (in this instance it is 14″ long which is about 4 oz.). The lead strip is then wrapped around the end of the nail that will eventually become the Turk’s head knot. It is glued on with an industrial glue that expands as it drys and fills any gaps between the layers of lead. It takes about 24 hours to dry completely but when it is finished it is solid and completely fixed to the handle with no slip or twist what-so-ever.
